Trades for Women in Nepal – Road to Entrepreneurship

trades for women empowerment in nepal

Nepal is a country with tens of thousands of underexplored resources. Among those resources, Nepal has a talented and a reliable workforce. Despite the skills however, the nation still has a mountainous 47% unemployment rate.

Yet, there is always hope for Nepalese – especially women – which are not only majority of its population, but also the majority in Nepal’s workforce since farming is the prevalent profession.

Farming and Agriculture in Nepal – The Leading Source of Income

Agriculture and farming in Nepal is second nature. 80% of the country’s population is engaged in farming. The country generates more than $45 billion annually. But most of it is from the country’s agricultural trade with its neighbor, India. Nepalese women cultivate the land, playing their important part in production and export of vegetable, fruits, spices, oilseeds, lentils, rice, maize, wheat, barley and essential oils, notably lemongrass and citronella.

Accessories and tools used in farming are also viable sources with which women in Nepal can lead a good life. Nepal has developed a bigger need for agricultural produces. Since the nation relies mostly on farming and other primary goods like rattan, bamboo, and ores, the need to sustain and prosper means Nepal need better tools to increase the output and cope with the increasing demands.

Situation of Women in Nepal – Apparent Problems

Unfortunately, Nepali women – despite being more than 51% of the population – make up only 0.01% of Nepal’s entrepreneurial sector. Female is the dominant gender in farming as well, but most of the working women are workers, not entrepreneurs.

Another thing complicating their case is the economic situation and the barriers which do not yield high rewards for Nepali women. Women lacking education and communication skills often find themselves helpless against the buyer or the limited market factor.

Entrepreneurship – Better Approach for a Better Life

For now, being an entrepreneur in Nepal is tough for women because of underlying barriers. And ironically, this is an opportune time for starting a business as well. With Nepal expanding its focus slowly, there is a big chance of women entering as entrepreneurs to become market leaders. But the primary hurdle in entrepreneurship is education and communication skills, as these open the doors to globalization.

Thankfully with local bodies and NGOs starting educational and franchising programs, there is now virtually no limit for working women to become women leading trades.

Social Franchising – The Answer to All Communication and Literacy Problems

Social franchising is gateway to trade. Those aspiring to become successful Nepali women in small business can start by becoming a social franchisee, where they can learn how to read, write, communicate and think like entrepreneurs.  Following their training, women can replicate the process, make more money with less effort and generate capital for their own trading business. Education also propels communication process between would-be female entrepreneur and the buyer.

Online Trading – Broadening the Vision of Nepali Women

Once women know how to communicate better and make deals more efficiently, they are able to start their own business. The major benefit of awareness and enlightenment in the 21st century is that Nepali women can increase the size of market by taking their business online.

Internet presents opportunities of trades for women in Nepal and outside of it by bringing the business to Nepali women’s doorsteps. Whether they are Business to Business or Business to Consumer websites, Nepalese women will be able to find buyers from any part of the world that are willing to buy their products in inconceivably reasonable prices.

Sum Up

Agricultural goods, as well as other products like weaved produces, patina, jute, rattan, bags, jewelry and others – any business can turn into a profitable phenomenon with education, communication skills, access to capital and by expanding the horizon. All of this can be achieved in just two steps: (i) social franchising and (ii) online trading.
